Start With Why: How To Be a Successful SEO/SMO Analyst and a Content Writer

Few days back, I was reading a book “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek. It was a great book to read and I love that one sentence “people don’t buy what you do; people buy why you do it“. And, I started thinking, Does my SEO team, SMO team and content marketing teams knows why they’re doing something to promote our business?

Here are a few points I want to make before I go to the checklist of “Why”,

  • Are you an SEO Analyst? And, just submitting links all the day? No No No… That is what Bots can do. What does that “Marketing guy in YOU” is doing?
  • Are you an SMO Analyst? And, just publishing content whatever your content team is providing? No No No… That is what Spammers can do. What does that “Branding Expert in YOU” is doing?
  • Are you a Content Writer? And, just writing whatever your Manager wants you to write? No No No… That is what personal assistant apps can do. What does that “Creative Writer in YOU” is doing?

Do you ever think about Why you’re doing something?

Do you know your Why? The purpose, cause, or belief that inspires you to do what you do? – Simon Sinek

From my perspective, You should always start with Why, then you move to What, Who, How and When. If you know your why, then you’re very clear about your goals, who are your customers, what you need to do, how to do and when to do.

Here is the checklist for an SEO Analyst, SMO Analyst and a content writer should ask themselves before start working.

What Should an SEO Analyst Ask himself or herself?

Why am I here as an SEO Analyst?

  • Why it is so important to have a product knowledge?
  • Why do I need to build a customer personas?
  • Why am I doing keyword research?
  • Why am I focusing more on content quality?
  • Why am I focusing more on content structure?
  • Why am I submitting my website in directories?
  • Why am I doing Local citation?
  • Why am I doing social bookmarking?
  • Why am I doing Classified Submissions?
  • Why am I doing Blog commenting?
  • Why am I pitching for Guest Posts?
  • Why am I focusing on building quality backlinks?
  • Why am I generating quality traffic to our website?
  • Why am I doing competitor Analysis?
  • Why do I need to use different SEO tools?
  • Why do I need to read SEO articles and news?
  • Why do I need to update myself with recent Search Engine Algorithms and changes?
  • Why do I need to check Google Analytics, Bing Analytics, Google Search Console every day?
  • Why do I need to build an SEO strategy based on the historical data and future predictions?

What Should an SMO Analyst Ask himself or herself?

Why am I here as an SMO Analyst?

  • Why it is so important to have a product knowledge?
  • Why am I gathering information to build our buyer personas?
  • Why am I sharing our services in Social Media?
  • Why am I sharing industry news in our social media pages?
  • Why am I connecting with people in Social Media?
  • Why am I interacting with customers in Social Media?
  • Why am I using different social media tools?
  • Why am I tracking our brand mentions?
  • Why do I need to connect with our Target audience?
  • Why am I connecting with our existing customers?
  • Why am I tracking social media traffic?
  • Why do I need to build a social media strategy based on the historical data and future predictions?

What Should a Content Writer Ask himself or herself?

Why am I here as a Content Writer?

  • Why it is so important to have a product knowledge?
  • Why do I need to look at our marketing personas for our business?
  • Why do I need to understand our products/services before I write something?
  • Why am I writing website Home page content?
  • Why am I writing About Us page content?
  • Why am I writing content for our Services?
  • Why am I writing articles and publishing them on our Blog?
  • Why am I writing content for Social Media team to publish it on Social Media?
  • Why am I writing Press releases?
  • Why am I writing supporting documents like Case Studies, White Papers, Free Guides and etc?
  • Why do I need to take feedback on my content?
  • Why do I need a weekly/monthly content calendar?
  • Why do I need to ask whether my content is generating traffic, leads and revenue?

When I ask someone from Marketing team Why you’re doing this, the very basic answer I get is to promote our business and services. That is correct, but if I ask why you’re doing that particular task, then team should have an answer rather than generalizing the answer.

As a business owner or a marketing head, we would expect our marketing team knows why they’re doing something to promote our business. Did I miss any “Why”? Please share your ideas.
